Much needed treat after a morning in the breast health clinic in The Mater Hospital this morning. I didn’t realize it was #worldcancerday today. Couldn’t get over how busy the waiting room was and how long people had to wait (my wait was just under 2 hours even with a scheduled appointment). My mum got breast cancer in her early 30s (before she had me), it went into remission and then it came back, spread and she died age 59 when I was 17. My Dad died of prostate cancer in 2012. Now that I’m in my early 40’s and I’m deemed moderate risk for breast cancer myself I’ve to go for an annual mammogram while still checking myself monthly. . Best to check yourself at the same time once a month while lying down and get to know your boobs. More often than that and you may not notice subtle changes. Being proactive and aware could help in early detection. Hopefully it never comes to that. Thinking of everyone who is or has been affected by cancer today xx
Still hanging on to the festive eating but with a healthy twist - turkey and baked ham salad with spinach, avocado, walnuts (for crunch) and pomegranate and persimmon (which are in season at the moment). Loads of sweet and salty flavors with crunch and creaminess. Lots of colours (I try to eat a rainbow everyday for all the phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals) and trying new produce (like persimmon and pomegranate while they are in season) helps towards getting diversity into my diet. First #greensmoothie of 2019. Making a conscious effort to get more fruits and veg (especially leafy greens) in to me. Forget about five-a-day, it should really be up at nine or ten a day. I’m mindful of what my body can handle with Crohn’s but smoothies are good as they can be easier on the digestion. I added lots of anti-inflammatory ginger to this one as I’m fighting a cold and cough. It definitely has a kick to it! #crohns #crohnsdisease #ibd #foodasmedicine #jerf #plantbased

The food in Boston was great. Loads of #glutenfree and #dairyfree options. The pumpkin caramel #vegan ice cream at @fomuicecream was the stuff of dreams! Also had a vegan gingerbread cookie (eaten before I could take a picture) which was delicious. The decaf almond latte in #pavementcoffee was 👌and the #matchalatte and #chiapudding from #ThinkingCup hit the spot but the avocado toast and poached eggs from #tattebakery was the breakfast highlight of the trip. We went to the one in Harvard and the cakes on display were so pretty! Loved it. My favorite dinner was fresh haddock and veg in #thesaltydog in Quincy Market. The homemade coleslaw was unreal. Also had burger with all the greens in The Merchant Bar & Grill and couldn’t leave Boston without trying a @wahlburgers. I didn’t have any problems getting places to accommodate my intolerances.
